Community, Schools & Landmarks — Fort Lee to Alpine

A plain, evenhanded look at the towns along the Palisades — the houses of worship, schools, parks, and landmarks that make up each community. This is the local knowledge every buyer deserves, no matter what they're looking for.

After thirty-plus years working across Bergen County, I've learned that a house is only part of the decision. Buyers want to understand the fabric of a town — where people gather, where children go to school, and what makes each place its own. This guide lays that out town by town, plainly and without spin.

Everything here is meant to be useful to everyone. I list institutions of many faiths side by side, public and private schools together, and the parks and landmarks that anyone can enjoy. If you'd like to talk through how any of these towns might fit your own needs, the best next step is a call.

Fort Lee

Fort Lee's civic life is woven from many threads. Houses of worship include Young Israel of Fort Lee and Chabad of Fort Lee, Madonna Roman Catholic Church, the Church of the Good Shepherd, Eden Presbyterian Church, Korean Grace Presbyterian Church, and the Korean Presbyterian Church of Fort Lee. Families here have Fort Lee High School and Lewis F. Cole Middle School in the public district, alongside Christ the Teacher Academy.

The borough gathers at the Jack Alter Fort Lee Community Center, the Nest Adult Activity Center, and the Japanese-American Society of NJ. For time outdoors and quiet study, there's the Fort Lee Public Library, Constitution Park, and the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway — and Fort Lee Historic Park, a cliff-top Revolutionary War site with sweeping overlooks of the George Washington Bridge.

Englewood

Englewood has a long and varied civic history. Its houses of worship include Congregation Ahavath Torah, East Hill Synagogue, and Etz Chaim / The Englewood Shtiebel, along with St. Cecilia Church, the First Presbyterian Church of Englewood, Bethany Presbyterian Church, Galilee United Methodist Church, and Community Baptist Church of Englewood.

Schooling options are notably broad: the public Academies @ Englewood magnet and Dwight Morrow High School, plus the independent Dwight-Englewood School and Elisabeth Morrow School, and The Moriah School. Culturally, the city is home to the Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergenPAC) and the Englewood Public Library, while Mackay Park and the Flat Rock Brook Nature Center offer room to breathe.

Englewood Cliffs

Englewood Cliffs is a small borough shaped in part by the corporate campuses nearby, including LG Electronics' North American headquarters and CNBC. Its houses of worship include Mount Calvary Baptist Church and the NYC Church of Christ (Englewood Cliffs).

The Englewood Cliffs Public Schools serve younger students through the North Cliff School (K-8) and send high-school students on to Dwight Morrow High School and the Academies @ Englewood. Also in the borough is the Japanese Children's Society (New York Ikuei Gakuen), a private Japanese school. Library service is provided through the Fort Lee Public Library.

Cliffside Park

Cliffside Park is a dense, diverse borough on the Palisades. Its houses of worship include the Church of the Epiphany, Trinity Episcopal Church, and the Lighthouse Korean Baptist Church of NJ.

The Cliffside Park public school district runs Cliffside Park High School, Cliffside Park Middle School, and its numbered elementary schools. The borough is served by the Cliffside Park Public Library, and a new combined recreation center and library is planned.

Leonia

Leonia is a compact town with a strong civic character. Its houses of worship include Congregation Adas Emuno, the Presbyterian Church in Leonia, the Leonia United Methodist Church, St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, and All Saints Episcopal Church.

The public schools — Anna C. Scott Elementary, Leonia Middle School, and Leonia High School — anchor the community. For recreation and reference, there's the Leonia Public Library, Wood Park, and CJ Kirkland Park, along with the historic Broad Avenue district.

Tenafly

Tenafly's houses of worship span many traditions: Kehilat Kesher (the Community Synagogue of Tenafly and Englewood), Temple Sinai of Bergen County, and Lubavitch on the Palisades; the Presbyterian Church at Tenafly, the Church of the Atonement, the United Methodist Church of Tenafly, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and Trinity Lutheran Church; and the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. John the Theologian and St. Thomas Armenian Apostolic Church.

Families have Tenafly High School, Tenafly Middle School, and the Mackay, Maugham, Smith, and Stillman elementary schools in the public district, plus the Academy of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The Kaplen JCC on the Palisades offers fitness, aquatics, the Thurnauer School of Music, and camps. Outdoors and study spaces include the Tenafly Nature Center, the Tenafly Public Library, and Roosevelt Common.

Alpine & Norwood

Alpine is a quiet borough along the Hudson cliffs. Its house of worship is the Alpine Community Church, and Alpine Elementary School (K-8) serves local students before sending them to Northern Valley Regional High School. The borough is known for the Alpine Scout Camp and the historic Armstrong Tower, an early FM radio site, with Palisades Interstate Park, the Alpine Picnic Area and Boat Basin, and the scenic Henry Hudson Drive along the river.

Norwood, just to the north, includes the Immaculate Conception Church, the Presbyterian Church in Norwood, and the Church of the Holy Communion. Norwood Public School serves students from PreK through 8th grade, with high-school students continuing on to Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan. The Norwood Public Library and Kennedy Park and Field round out the town's public resources.

Most towns also have their own public library and local parks, all noted by town above.

How do I figure out which town fits me?

The best way is to talk it through. Every buyer weighs schools, commute, community, and budget differently, and I'd rather understand your priorities than guess. Give me a call and we'll walk through the options together.
